Van Houten’s brew is a concept design for a beer company’s bourbon-aged imperial stout style brew. The specific ingredient that is prominent in this stout brew is chocolate. The goal of the label was to make the design appealing, intriguing, and tell a story. With my love for learning and reading history, I discovered and researched a man named Coenraad van Houten.
When chocolate first came on the scene in Europe, it was a luxury only the rich could enjoy. But in 1828, Dutch chemist Coenraad van Houten discovered a way to treat cacao beans with alkaline salts to make a powdered chocolate that was easier to mix with water. Van Houten unlocked and unleashed chocolate to the masses. Anyone who loves chocolate owes a huge debt of gratitude to him, as his invention powered the modern production of chocolate as we know it today.
The idea of Van Houten unleashing his innovative concoction to the world sparked a variety of fun design elements and powerful visuals for the final beer bottle label.
